William A. Means
Co. A, 13th WVI

    William Means was born Oct. 27, 1844, in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia.  He enlised in the 13th West Virginia Infantry on Aug. 22, 1862.  At that time he was described as 19 years old, 5'8" tall, and had a dark complexion, dark eyes, and black hair.  He was mustered into service on Oct. 7, 1862, at Point Pleasant, West Virginia.  In March, 1863, he served the regiment as a prison guard, and in August, 1863, served as a recruiter.  He also served as one of "Blazer's Scouts."  William Means died on July 18, 1931 at Willard, Huron County, Ohio.
