Obituary: Death of Robert Samples

Robert Samples, a well known citizen of Kanawha County, died at his home at Gallipolis, O., on Jan. 5, 1917.

He was a member of the M.E. Church for forty-two years and died in that faith. He was married twice. His first wife was Mary C. Pauley and to them were borne eleven children of which five are dead and six survive him.

His second wife was the widow of David Hinkle and to them were borne seven children; the widown having four which made eleven children in this second family. In both families were twenty-two children. He is also survived by thirty-eight grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren. Five grandchildren, children, and two great-grandchildren are dead.

Nine of his first and second families are dead and all the rest and many friends survive him and to mourne the loss of his death.

He was eighty-two years, nine months and seven days old when he died. He was laid to rest in the Gallipolis Cemetery with best wishes and regards to his friends.
 

Military: "Robert Samples was a soldier in the Union army, during the Civil War. He enlisted in Company I, 13th West Virginia Infantry, on December 27, 1862. He took part in fourteen battles and was discharged June 22, 1865." He served with Agrippa Samples, his brother, and Robert L Young, his first cousin.
