William W. Whittaker enlisted with the regiment shortly after it was organized in October, 1862. Within a few months he was injured when a box fell on his leg and dislocated his knee, crippling him for life. He was discharged with a disability in March, 1863, at the age of 21.
He was married to Virginia F. High on July 14, 1860, at Gallipolis, Ohio. He fathered ten children before his untimely death of tuberculosis on April 19, 1890, at the age of 47. He is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Ohio, in the Old Soldiers' Circle, Section A, Row 4, Grave 9.
