Expedition to Piney in Search of Loring
July 1863

Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion says that from July 5-14, the Thirteenth went on an: "Expedition to Piney in pursuit of Loring."40 Hayes wrote that on July 14 his brigade reached Raleigh County, having started from Fayetteville on July 12. There they "Found enemy strongly fortified at Piney River."41 Colonel Brown reported that on July 13, "the Regiment was ordered to Raleigh C.H., and arrived there at 12 M., July 14th; this night the enemy retreated from their fortifications at Piney leaving some stores behind."42 On July 15, the Thirteenth started back to Fayetteville.
