Expedition to Piney in Search of Loring
July 1863

Dyer's Compendium of the War of the Rebellion says that from July 5-14, the Thirteenth went on an: "Expedition to Piney in pursuit of Loring."⁴⁰ Hayes wrote that on July 14 his brigade reached Raleigh County, having started from Fayetteville on July 12. There they "Found enemy strongly fortified at Piney River."⁴¹ Colonel Brown reported that on July 13, "the Regiment was ordered to Raleigh C.H., and arrived there at 12 M., July 14th; this night the enemy retreated from their fortifications at Piney leaving some stores behind."⁴² On July 15, the Thirteenth started back to Fayetteville.
